Masterton

Masterton was established in 1854. It is the largest town in Wairarapa and has played a traditional role as the service centre for extended urban and rural communities. Now it attracts an increasing number of visitors from outside the region who are seeing the town as a destination rather than just a point on route.

Masterton’s varied economy includes extensive agriculture, horticulture and forestry, as well as tourism, light industry and retail. Road and rail links connect north to Manawatu and Hawkes Bay, and south to Wellington.

An extensive range of facilities, including motels, hotels and excellent cafés and restaurants, make the town an ideal location for conferences and events.

Off the beaten track the region's unique natural heritage is easily accessible. Walking and tramping, outdoor adventures and the world-renowned Pukaha Mt Bruce National Wildlife Centre are all close to the town.
