Wellington, New Zealand’s Capital City, is the country’s government and diplomatic powerhouse. It is a relatively compact but perfectly-formed city known for its dramatic location between a beautiful harbour and steep hills.
The city is the largest in the Wellington region and has a cosmopolitan, well-educated population of about 180,000.
Wellington is also known as New Zealand’s Cultural and Events Capital. There is always something to watch, experience, or do – indoors in the theatres, museums and galleries; outdoors on the harbour and bustling waterfront, or in the parks and rugged reserves.
The city has a growing international reputation for its creative population. It has a thriving film industry and is also home to innovative ICT and engineering companies.
Wellington City Council wants to capitalise on these internationally-desirable attributes to help economic growth and prosperity and maintain the quality of life of Wellingtonians.
Creative Wellington – Innovation Capital is the Council’s long-term strategic vision for the city. It aims to promote the Capital’s creative reputation in order to retain smart and innovative Wellingtonians – and to attract like-minded newcomers to the region.
In support of this vision, the Council is determined to make Wellington internationally competitive and help create and maintain an environment conducive to a world-class quality of life. That’s why the Council has six planning priorities:
-
