The Wellington Regional Strategy Office, in conjunction with the Wellington region's councils and Ministry for the Environment, held this one day Symposium, 'Stretching the Horizon', in August 2010 at Circa Theatre, Wellington.
Hon Dr Nick Smith spoke, followed by key note speakers Martin Wedderburn (Principal Transport Planner, Colin Buchanan, London) and Stuart Niven (Urban Design Director, Department of Planning and Community Development, Victorian State Government). The key note speakers discussed urban design approaches in the UK and Australia, focussing on the integration of urban design and transport.
The key note sessions were followed by more technical sessions discussing specific tools for achieving successful urban design, with presentations from Tim Heath, David Silvester, Sarah Duffell, and Tim Church.
These speakers set the framework for representatives from the Wellington region's councils who spoke about urban design within their territorial authority.
It was a successful day with urban designers, planners, architects and others from across New Zealand all getting together to discuss urban design.
