The Hui Taumata Trust Regional Development Programme

The Hui Taumata Trust has a history spanning over 20 years. It is a unique and highly successful partnership of Maori leadership, business, unions and government. Its vision is to expand Maori economic pathways.

In collaboration with the Department of Labour, the Hui Taumata Trust published an analysis report: Unleashing Māori Potential: Activating the Māori Workforce in the Wellington Region.  It is a first step in developing a vehicle through which Māori, employers, and educational institutions can identify and align their collective interests in improving Māori labour market outcomes.  As such, it is an overview of the labour market situation for the Wellington Region’s Māori, intended to assist the identification of areas where Māori potential is not being realised and to identify critical intervention points.

  • Initiatives are being developed that will take advantage of the opportunities and minimise the barriers identified in the report.  These initiatives will proactively address the key areas of: labour market, skill development, education, and small business opportunities in order to:
  • inform and support the leaders of the Wellington Regional Strategy to recognise and implement practical initiatives to help realise the potential of the Māori labour force to contribute to a strong regional economy;
  • ensure that Māori potential in the Wellington region’s – and New Zealand’s - labour market  is supported and realised; and,
  • develop an adaptable model that can be used as a blueprint for initiatives in other regions.

Feedback from various stakeholders have indicated support for the following key initiatives:

  • A residential ‘hothousing’ programme for 14-25 year olds
  • Information and Communication Technology skills programmes
  • Science and technology careers for Maori
  • Literacy and numeracy skills programmes

The Regional Workforce Development project is intended to support the development of local and regional responses to national strategies and initiatives. Read more
